Things a Tai Chi Student Should Know

Training Course

Come along to deepen your knowledge and ability in Tai Chi.

15th August 2026

Time: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Level: Open to all levels (Beginner to Advanced)

Why You Should Join This Session.

If you would like to have an in-depth look at some of the foundational aspects of Tai Chi, then join us for a all-day intensive course. It will allow you to deepen your practice, refine your mechanics, and elevate your internal awareness. Whether you are looking to solidify your basics or unlock deeper layers of your form, this workshop focuses on the vital elements every Tai Chi practitioner wants to master.

~ Throughout the day we will work on the following ~

1. Attitudinal Aspects (The Inner State)

Tai Chi is as much a mental discipline as a physical one. We will explore how to cultivate the internal environment necessary for deep practice.

⦿ Intent (Yi) & Tranquility: Learn to quiet the mind (Xin) so the mind can actively lead the movement. Move with purpose, directing internal energy rather than just going through the motions.

⦿ Confidence & Openness: Cultivate the trust to move without hesitation while maintaining a "beginner’s mind" - remaining open to fine corrections and shedding old habits.

2. Technical Aspects (Internal & External Mechanics)

Mastering the physical structure allows the internal energy to flow. We will analyze the biomechanics of correct movement.

⦿ Sung (Relaxation) & Rooting: Understand the difference between relaxation and floppiness. Learn to actively release muscular tension so your weight sinks into the earth through the Yongquan (bubbling well) points.

⦿ Center, Balance & Flow: Master the clear distinction between substantial (full) and insubstantial (empty) weight. Keep the Dantian stable, moving like "pulling silk from a cocoon"—continuous, unbroken, and uniform.

⦿ Integrated Movement & The "Gaze": Practice the classic rule: "If one part moves, every part moves." We will also practice shifting away from looking at your feet, adopting a soft, panoramic peripheral vision.

3. Martial Awareness (The Intent)

Tai Chi was originally a martial art. Understanding martial applications gives your health practice its correct structure and dimension:

⦿ Functional Application: Discover the martial meaning behind the postures.

⦿ The Invisible Partner: Practice the form with the presence of an opponent to refine your height, distance, and expression of energy.

⦿ The Core Energies (Jin): Explore the direction of force, looking deeply into the primary energies: Peng (Ward-off), Lü (Rollback), Ji (Press), and An (Push), alongside an introduction to Cai, Kao, Lie, and Zhou.

What to Expect

⦿ Detailed, step-by-step breakdowns of internal mechanics.

⦿ Q & A - Opportunities to troubleshoot specific postures or discuss concerns or questions.
